Introductions

Roam Like Ghosts

We are all ghosts.

Roam Like Ghosts is an acoustic trio that blends alternative, indie, folk, and Americana genres, with emotionally charged lyrics that have led to their sound being dubbed "Emoacana." The band was formed in 2017 by singer-songwriter Mathew Daugherty (Reston, VA) and guitarist-songwriter Bucky Fairfax (Cary, NC). Bassist Bobby DeRosa (Haymarket, VA) joined as a touring and studio musician in 2018, becoming a full-time member in 2023.

Known for their "haunting" and "deeply reflective" sound, Roam Like Ghosts creates a space for introspection in an uncertain world. Through delicate guitar arrangements and emotionally rich lyrics, the band delivers an intimate and personal musical experience, offering a poetic exploration of life's emotional struggles that resonates deeply with listeners.

The band's sound has evolved while staying true to its acoustic roots, masterfully blending the reflective warmth of Americana with the raw emotional depth of alternative rock. Their live shows create an immersive experience, bringing emotional themes to life with a raw yet soothing presence that resonates with fans of both alternative and Americana music.

Roam Like Ghosts' third album, 'Church', delves deeper into themes of self-reflection, connection, and transformation. This new release expands on their acoustic foundation with atmospheric production and a diverse array of songs, drawing inspiration from indie and alternative genres as well as personal life experiences.

Previous releases, including 'Yesterday and the Day Before' (2017) and '...to that place you call home' (2021), have been praised for their introspective sound. Like their earlier work, 'Church' (2024) was recorded with producer Dick Hodgin (Hootie & the Blowfish, Cravin' Melon, Clay Aiken, Corrosion of Conformity, Lynyrd Skynyrd) at Osceola Recording Studios in Raleigh, NC.

Roam Like Ghosts proves that music can be both delicate and powerful, personal and universal. Their songs, steeped in themes of love, loss, hope, and transformation, invite listeners to pause, reflect, and feel. 'Church' continues this journey, delivering a sound that is intimate, reflective, and dynamic, further refining their blend of acoustic-driven storytelling with an alternative edge.

DISCOGRAPHY

CHURCH "CHURCH" is our most ambitious album yet. With these 10 new tracks, we’ve raised the stakes and gone bigger than ever—because, for us, bigger is always better. This album took over a year and a half to complete, and we couldn't be prouder of the result. "Every song is a piece of us, a reflection on what we’ve learned and how we’ve grown." CHURCH will be available for pre-release on Bandcamp on November 15, 2024, with the full release on all streaming and download platforms on November 22, 2024.

"CHURCH" was recorded at Osceola Recording Studios in Raleigh, NC with Dick Hodgin (Hootie and The Blowfish, Cravin' Melon, Clay Aiken, Corrosion Of Conformity, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Quest) at the helm again, engineering and producing.
Yesterday and the Day Before "...to that place you call home" was started in February 2020 as an EP, but COVID shutdowns and delays allowed for more songs to be written and finalized and an 11 song album was completed at the end of December 2020. The album was pre-released on Bandcamp on January 1, 2021 and released on February 26th, 2021 on all other major digital platforms. The album has a bigger sound with more instrumentation, musical guests, while maintaining the acoustic feel. "We can honestly say, this is some of the best work that we've done yet."

Yesterday and the Day Before "Yesterday and the Day Before" was released on October 20th, 2017, digitally. "With the popularity of digital media and everyone listening to everything through a digital device, whether downloading or streaming, we didn't see the purpose for manufactoring tons of CD's that a listener would just burn onto their computer or device. Plus it made for less things to bring to shows." For almost a year, the duo went back and forth, crossing state lines to write and record this album. "We are pretty happy with outcome and hope that everyone else is too."

REVIEWS

Roam Like Ghosts Didn’t Overthink Their New Album CHURCH, and That’s What Makes It Brilliant
"This record is compelling, not just for its music (though there’s plenty to admire there) but as a study in its lyrics, their impact, and their connection to the listener. What do I love most? This album doesn’t try to be “for everyone.” It’s specific. It resonates with those willing to listen. This is an album for those searching for themselves amidst the noise."

Roam Like Ghosts – Church by Sleeping Bag Studios
"Great energy and BIG vocals on the opening track “Death And Me.” It’s tight stuff when it comes right down to it…not all that far removed from something you’d find smack dab in the middle of sounds you love in The Black Crowes and Soul Asylum…somewhere in between all that."

Roam Like Ghosts - Death and Me
"Keeping in line with the theme of self reflection and transformation that underscores the album, Death and Me explores the ephemerality of life. The swinging, upbeat rhythm of the drumming coupled with the radiant, rich guitar riffs forms an immersive, uplifting atmosphere. The expressive, passion-filled vocals lay down catchy, charismatic melodies in a way that pleasantly contrasts the heaviness and depth of the theme, making the song all the more addictive."

Roam Like Ghosts’ New Church
"They dish out some solid Americana on the melancholy anthem “The Weight” and the heartfelt ballad “Not Giving up on You”. The acoustic lament “Futures” shows their folkier side. Then the band cranks up their amplifiers to 11, as they teeter precariously between alternative rock and outlaw country on the barn-burner “Casual Conversations About Serious Situations."

Crap!!! Time sure does fly. This isn't updated as frequently as our Instagram or Facebook page. What have we been up too? Well last night we played in Richmond, Va at our usual haunt, Gardern Grove Brewery. We had a local duo/band, Americans Abroad kick off the show and they were great, so a BIG THANKS to them. It was a good crowd of new faces, family and friends. It was good to see everyone. Other than that, we've been working on our 3rd album, which it's almost been a year since we started. We've definitely kicked things up a notch on it and we are happy with what we've done, just need to get finishing touches on it to get it out sometime this summer. As always, thanks for the continued support.
October 30, 2023
Good to see family and friends at the Garden Grove gig in Richmond, VA this past weekend. Now we will get our noses back to the grindstone working on this new album.
October 8, 2023
Hey just wanted to remind everyone that we'll be in Richmond, VA at Garden Grove Brewery on Saturday, October 28th.

We've been pretty busy working on our 3rd album. It'll be 10 tracks and we've taken things up a notch from our last release, '...to that place you call home'. We've also brought on a new member, so we're no longer a duo, but a trio. We've welcomed our friend and touring bassist, Bobby DeRosa (The Unaccountables (with Mathew) and formerly of 3STARKARMA (with Mathew) and When Embers Ignite) to roam with us. Bobby has been playing live with us since 2018 and played bass on our sophmore release, '...to that place you call home'. Our new album brings us back to Osceola Recording Studios with Dick Hodgin back on the controls. We are shooting for a release early 2024.
August 16, 2023

HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVERYONE!!!!
December 14, 2022
I know it's been awhile and really nothing has happened in that time with our music. We've been really busy in our personal lives with family, day jobs, staying healthy and trying to stay sane. COVID finally caught up with me after avoiding it since it's insepetion and fortunaltely I didn't get it that bad. I know Bucky had it over the summer sometime as well. We are both doing well now and looking towards the new year. New Year, New Music? That's what we are hoping for, to head back into the studio and crank out some new tunes that we've been sitting on and possibly write some more. Until then, we wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. Take care, stay safe, stay healthy.
June 8, 2022
What's going on? If you missed us last month in Richmond, VA, that's a bummer, because we missed you and wish you could have been there. We premired a few new songs and had a great time. We are not sure when our next performance will be. It's hard to put them together when we live in different states, but we are trying. Who knows, maybe we'll be back in the studio soon recording a follow up to '...to that place you call home'. We'll keep you posted. And as always, thanks for the support.
March 10, 2022
Man, I didn't realize how long it's been since we last posted. Sorry about that. Things have been going slow with us but we are writing new material and hope to play some live gigs in the spring and summer. We generally keep to ourselves and aren't the most outgoing on social media, definitely 'old school' when it comes to socializing. Some of our new song titles are, 'Futures', 'The Weight', and 'Hasta Luego', with more in the works. Thanks for sticking with us, take care and see you soon.
August 17, 2021
After a great start to the year with the release of our second album, '...to that place you call home', and the amazing response it's had, we've had to put on the brakes due deaths in our families and the focus has shifted gears to our families. Hopefully we'll get some gigs together before the end of the year and start writing for the next album. Thanks everyone. Stay safe and take care of yourselves and each other.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!
Last night we released our long awaited NEW 2nd Album, '...to that place you call home' via Bandcamp before it's worldwide digital release to all the other digital platforms on February 26th, 2021. SO check it out and tell us what you think of it via Facebook, Instagram, or even email us. We started it a little less than a year ago and we are really proud of this album and how it turned out.
November 11, 2020
Man, time flies. I just realized that we haven't made an update here since July. A lot has happened since then so here's the latest.
We've finished the initial mixing of our 2nd album, we'll tell you the name of it soon. We've had album cover photo shoots, band photo shoots, planning, and trying to get all of our eggs in one basket prior of the albums release. Now about a release date, due to COVID and some happenings with our families and schedules, our plans to release the album by the end of this year has been pushed to January 2021. We still have to do some final tweaks and mastering before getting it out. The album cover and all that that consists of, is pretty much done. We may make the album available via Bandcamp before it gets digitally distrubuted world-wide. We will get a limited amount of CD's made, as well, for when we play live but like the first album, it'll be digital. We are extremely happy with the way this new album turned out and we are hoping that you will too. If you go to our Facebook page, you can see us doing an album song preview. We apreciate your patience and your support. Hopefully we'll see you soon.
July 18, 2020
ALBUM UPDATE!!!!! The recording of our second album has resumed. I (Matt) have finished vocal tracking and Bucky has laid down the guitars. We have guests coming in and recording different instrumentation on the different tracks and once that finishes up, then comes MIXING!!! We are shooting for a late fall release. We'll keep you updated.
July 17, 2020
Due to the coronavirus and the spike recently in Leesburg, we had to cancel our Acoustics on the Green performance (they may cancel it anyway, they canceled June and July performances and the web site isn't current). We have family members that are compromised and we can not put ourselves in a position that may cause possible harm to them. Thank you for understanding and hopefully we can get through this sooner than later and things can get back to normal. Until then, please wear masks while you are out, if not for yourself, do it for others and the ones you love. Stay safe.

This pandemic/shutdown/stay at home ordeal has at least given us some time to get some more tunes written for the album. So the process is slow going, but we're working on it.

We'd also like to give a big shout out to our friend and sit in bassist, Bobby Derosa and his wife, Katie, on the birth of their baby girl, Bella. Congratulations!!!!!

Hey everyone! We hope that everyone is staying safe, social distancing, and following the stay at home protocols for your state, we can beat COVID-19 if we all do our part.

Album update, the new album is on hold until it is safe for us to head back into the studio. All involved have family member that is immunocompromised, therefore, not only do we want to keep them safe, we want to keep everyone else and ourselves safe as well. So once we can get back into the full swing of things, we'll let you know. Thanks for the support. Stay strong, stay safe.

Hard work pays off. Our little duo, ROAM LIKE GHOSTS, have finally received notice from SongTradr, that 8 of the songs from our album, “Yesterday and the Day Before”, were selected into a licensing deal with MooD Overhead music. What this means is, our songs will be getting played worldwide in retail spaces, gyms, restaurants, etc.

So next time you’re in your favorite store, you may hear one of our tracks playing on the in house station.

Take it on the Chin and One Thing, were not entered into this deal because they each have one bad word. LOL.

Thanks everyone for listening and for your support - Bucky & Matt
