Introductions

Bucky Fairfax and Mathew Daugherty

We are all ghosts.

As if you haven't guessed it, we are Roam Like Ghosts, and thank you for checking us out. This is now the part where we tell you little about us and what we are doing.

Roam Like Ghosts is the acoustic duo of singer/songwriter, Mathew Daugherty and guitarist/songwriter, Bucky Fairfax. Mathew resides in Reston, VA; Bucky in Cary, NC. The duo’s song writing process is a virtual experience, iterating through a geographic distance until songs are formed and the story is told. Despite the distance, the duo performs regionally between DC and North Carolina at a variety of cafes, bars, and breweries in what the band describes as intimate performances in settings conducive to their sound and mood.

Mathew started singing at an early age and started his first band with some high school friends in the 10th grade. Bucky grew up around musicians and started playing guitar at 13. His dad was a major early influence being an amateur bluegrass guitarist.  Both grew up on and were influenced by classic rock, 70’s and 80’s metal, grunge and alternative rock of the 90’s, and current hard rock, alternative and acoustic rock.

The Ghosts were introduced in a previous life in 1993 through mutual friends in Richmond, VA when Bucky’s band was looking for a singer. After a few line-up and name changes, the band SEDAH was established and performed and recorded music from 1994-1998. Fast forward twenty years to 2017, after a handful of collaborations and a few bands later (notably for Daugherty - 3STARKARMA and The Unaccountables and notably for Fairfax - Radio Silent Auction, and Something for Now), the two musicians reunited in a musical fusion with a new acoustic sound and writing style more subtle in intensity and deep in reflection and reminiscence, more simplistic and refined, and with a softer edge from their formative years.

Roam Like Ghosts was formed from the writing and recording of their debut album, ‘Yesterday and the Day Before’. The band name comes from a Daugherty lyric in the haunting track "A Ballad of a Friend" and represents for the band a passage of time with connection to our past and future.

“Roam Like Ghosts is an innovative blend of roots-y sounds, put through a post-grunge alternative lens...Anchored by graceful guitar playing and augmented by introspective vocals, the music takes the listener on an emotional ride through the ebb and flow of life.” - Indie Plus Music. Their sound consists of delicate guitar playing and restraint coupled with vocal strength, ghostly melodies, and sober thoughtfulness forming songs of love and loss, life and death, hope and fear.

2021 delivers their sophomore release, '...to that place you call home', in which the Ghosts expanded their production but maintained the pure elements of their acoustic sound delivering a reflective and emotive mix of songs. The album was partly written and mostly recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic and lock down, which made recording all that more of a challenge and rewarding for the duo.

The new album was recorded at Osceola Recording Studios in Raleigh, NC with Dick Hodgin (Hootie and The Blowfish, Cravin' Melon, Clay Aiken, Corrosion Of Conformity, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Quest) at the controls again and finds the group hosting a number of guest musicians providing percussive and ethereal accompaniment to the album's well rounded alternative sound in a full production release.

With roots in alternative and grunge and added acoustic, swampy flair, drawing on life experiences and inspiring self reflection, hope and change, Roam Like Ghosts provides a unique soundscape for much needed escape and reflective calm in current times of the strange and uncertain.

DISCOGRAPHY

Yesterday and the Day Before "...to that place you call home" was started in February 2020 as an EP, but COVID shutdowns and delays allowed for more songs to be written and finalized and an 11 song album was completed at the end of December 2020. The album was pre-released on Bandcamp on January 1, 2021 and released on February 26th, 2021 on all other major digital platforms. The album has a bigger sound with more instrumentation, musical guests, while maintaining the acoustic feel. "We can honestly say, this is some of the best work that we've done yet."

"...to that place you call home" was recorded at Osceola Recording Studios in Raleigh, NC with Dick Hodgin (Hootie and The Blowfish, Cravin' Melon, Clay Aiken, Corrosion Of Conformity, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnny Quest) at the helm again, engineering and producing.
Yesterday and the Day Before "Yesterday and the Day Before" was released on October 20th, 2017, digitally. "With the popularity of digital media and everyone listening to everything through a digital device, whether downloading or streaming, we didn't see the purpose for manufactoring tons of CD's that a listener would just burn onto their computer or device. Plus it made for less things to bring to shows." For almost a year, the duo went back and forth, crossing state lines to write and record this album. "We are pretty happy with outcome and hope that everyone else is too."

REVIEWS

'...to that place you call home' Reviews

Our first single, 'Disappear', from '...to that place you call home' was reviewed by A&R Factory.
"With profoundly eloquent vocals that seep into your mind and make you imagine taking a trip away with that special human in your life, to hearing such intricately meshed guitar sequences that make you gasp in excitement, this is a truly fine song with so much to like inside its caring core."
For the rest - A&R Factory
"It’s the kind of record that brings you from one side of the acoustic-based realm to the other, and in the process, creates a flexible lineup of songs that can’t help but keep you fully entertained, if not outright fascinated at the impressive level of insightful emotion and heartfelt themes."
For the rest - Sleeping Bag Studios
"I get crazy when bands blend their own styles, along with tints of old school and different instruments. You know, things that give you pause – and goosebumps."
For the rest - Divide and Conquer
"The eleven song collection finds the duo further defining and exploring their unique mix of Rock-infused acoustic Folk music. Within the context of singer/songwriter acoustic music the album shines a light on the musicians’ extensive experience in multiple musical genres."
For the rest - The Static Dive
"Their new album “To That Place You Call Home” is nothing less than fantastic......"
"They obviously know their sound and have created a gem. I said it before and I’ll say it again, easily the best album I’ve heard so far in 2021."
For the rest - Indie Music Plus
Indie Music Plus reviewed our single, 'Disappear', in their web episode 231. To hear what they had to say, CLICK HERE

Our song 'Smile' was reviewed on Indie Music Plus episode 156. Check it out on their YouTube Channel - HERE
Roam Like Ghosts is an innovative blend of roots-y sounds, put through a post-grunge alternative lens...Anchored by graceful guitar playing and augmented by introspective vocals, the music takes the listener an emotional ride through the ebb and flow of life.
For the rest - Indie Music Plus
"The album, which one could surmise is something of an anthology, includes standout songs like the opening track, “When The Wind Blew,” plus “The Quiet”; “If Walls Could Talk,” and “Smile.”

The latter track, “Smile,” is a single waiting in the wings thanks to its beautifully layered harmonies and musical instruments creating magnificent melodies."
For the rest - Indie Rock Cafe
"Musically, Roam Like Ghosts is acoustically driven with rich textures and warm rhythms. Vocally, Daugherty and Fairfax’s singing were absolutely fantastic..."
For the rest - Divide and Conquer
"'Smile' is perhaps the duo’s most affecting number, with its sunny, hopeful eloquence that conveys the singer’s sincere wish to make up with his girl and get back together. Solid all around, these Ghosts could bring a humanistic spirit to any coffeehouse... "
For the rest - Music Connection Magazine
"RLG manage to traverse that territory alongside other familiar ones like country and folk. But the band's very core is unmistakably alternative, which makes them sound contemporary and focused. The convincing performances of Matthew Daugherty on vocals and Bucky Fairfax on the acoustic and slide guitar also help with this ambitious task..."
For the rest - Drooble
"Roam Like Ghosts make a bold statement with their debut, Yesterday and the Day Before, by going against the current of today’s hip-pop wave..."
For the rest - I AM THE INDUSTRY
"Currently in the midst of the big-wave-of-sound musical culture, I find projects like Roam Like Ghosts‘ debut album, Yesterday And The Day Before, refreshing in its minimalist and low-maintenance approach. Skilled guitar artistry, bonafide vocal prowess..."
For the rest - The Ark of Music
"Roam Like Ghosts blends the alternative world in an acoustic demeanor towards a grungy bravura through a collaborative effort to infiltrate the music scene on their newest single , ‘Smile’..."
For the rest - Artistrack

Crap!!! Time sure does fly. This isn't updated as frequently as our Instagram or Facebook page. What have we been up too? Well last night we played in Richmond, Va at our usual haunt, Gardern Grove Brewery. We had a local duo/band, Americans Abroad kick off the show and they were great, so a BIG THANKS to them. It was a good crowd of new faces, family and friends. It was good to see everyone. Other than that, we've been working on our 3rd album, which it's almost been a year since we started. We've definitely kicked things up a notch on it and we are happy with what we've done, just need to get finishing touches on it to get it out sometime this summer. As always, thanks for the continued support.
October 30, 2023
Good to see family and friends at the Garden Grove gig in Richmond, VA this past weekend. Now we will get our noses back to the grindstone working on this new album.
October 8, 2023
Hey just wanted to remind everyone that we'll be in Richmond, VA at Garden Grove Brewery on Saturday, October 28th.

We've been pretty busy working on our 3rd album. It'll be 10 tracks and we've taken things up a notch from our last release, '...to that place you call home'. We've also brought on a new member, so we're no longer a duo, but a trio. We've welcomed our friend and touring bassist, Bobby DeRosa (The Unaccountables (with Mathew) and formerly of 3STARKARMA (with Mathew) and When Embers Ignite) to roam with us. Bobby has been playing live with us since 2018 and played bass on our sophmore release, '...to that place you call home'. Our new album brings us back to Osceola Recording Studios with Dick Hodgin back on the controls. We are shooting for a release early 2024.
August 16, 2023
Hey! We hope to see everyone this Friday the 18th at the Peak of the Vine in Apex, NC.
We also have a date change for the Garden Grove performance in RVA in October. We had to move it to Saturday, October 28th, same place, same time. Hope to see all of our RVA friends there.
July 21, 2023
Apologies for not posting in so long. Yes we are alive a still kicking and actually we atarted recording our new, 3rd release in April and we hope to get it out by the end of the year. We have a couple shows coming up as well, see the Appearances over on the right side to find out where. If you've been checking in, thanks, we apprciate the support and the patience. We'll try to post more frequently in the coming months.

HAPPY NEW YEAR'S EVERYONE!!!!
December 14, 2022
I know it's been awhile and really nothing has happened in that time with our music. We've been really busy in our personal lives with family, day jobs, staying healthy and trying to stay sane. COVID finally caught up with me after avoiding it since it's insepetion and fortunaltely I didn't get it that bad. I know Bucky had it over the summer sometime as well. We are both doing well now and looking towards the new year. New Year, New Music? That's what we are hoping for, to head back into the studio and crank out some new tunes that we've been sitting on and possibly write some more. Until then, we wish everyone Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. Take care, stay safe, stay healthy.
June 8, 2022
What's going on? If you missed us last month in Richmond, VA, that's a bummer, because we missed you and wish you could have been there. We premired a few new songs and had a great time. We are not sure when our next performance will be. It's hard to put them together when we live in different states, but we are trying. Who knows, maybe we'll be back in the studio soon recording a follow up to '...to that place you call home'. We'll keep you posted. And as always, thanks for the support.
March 10, 2022
Man, I didn't realize how long it's been since we last posted. Sorry about that. Things have been going slow with us but we are writing new material and hope to play some live gigs in the spring and summer. We generally keep to ourselves and aren't the most outgoing on social media, definitely 'old school' when it comes to socializing. Some of our new song titles are, 'Futures', 'The Weight', and 'Hasta Luego', with more in the works. Thanks for sticking with us, take care and see you soon.
August 17, 2021
After a great start to the year with the release of our second album, '...to that place you call home', and the amazing response it's had, we've had to put on the brakes due deaths in our families and the focus has shifted gears to our families. Hopefully we'll get some gigs together before the end of the year and start writing for the next album. Thanks everyone. Stay safe and take care of yourselves and each other.
July 26, 2021
It was great to play live again this past weekend at the Leesburg Acoustic on the Green Concert Series, in Virginia. Nice crowd, nice evening, new faes and new and old friends. We look forward to doing it again, Thanks for the continued support, as always. Stay safe everyone.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!
Last night we released our long awaited NEW 2nd Album, '...to that place you call home' via Bandcamp before it's worldwide digital release to all the other digital platforms on February 26th, 2021. SO check it out and tell us what you think of it via Facebook, Instagram, or even email us. We started it a little less than a year ago and we are really proud of this album and how it turned out.
November 11, 2020
Man, time flies. I just realized that we haven't made an update here since July. A lot has happened since then so here's the latest.
We've finished the initial mixing of our 2nd album, we'll tell you the name of it soon. We've had album cover photo shoots, band photo shoots, planning, and trying to get all of our eggs in one basket prior of the albums release. Now about a release date, due to COVID and some happenings with our families and schedules, our plans to release the album by the end of this year has been pushed to January 2021. We still have to do some final tweaks and mastering before getting it out. The album cover and all that that consists of, is pretty much done. We may make the album available via Bandcamp before it gets digitally distrubuted world-wide. We will get a limited amount of CD's made, as well, for when we play live but like the first album, it'll be digital. We are extremely happy with the way this new album turned out and we are hoping that you will too. If you go to our Facebook page, you can see us doing an album song preview. We apreciate your patience and your support. Hopefully we'll see you soon.
July 18, 2020
ALBUM UPDATE!!!!! The recording of our second album has resumed. I (Matt) have finished vocal tracking and Bucky has laid down the guitars. We have guests coming in and recording different instrumentation on the different tracks and once that finishes up, then comes MIXING!!! We are shooting for a late fall release. We'll keep you updated.
July 17, 2020
Due to the coronavirus and the spike recently in Leesburg, we had to cancel our Acoustics on the Green performance (they may cancel it anyway, they canceled June and July performances and the web site isn't current). We have family members that are compromised and we can not put ourselves in a position that may cause possible harm to them. Thank you for understanding and hopefully we can get through this sooner than later and things can get back to normal. Until then, please wear masks while you are out, if not for yourself, do it for others and the ones you love. Stay safe.
June 11, 2020
HEY EVERYONE!!! An interview we did with UPSTREAM INDIE.com just posted today. You can check it out here - UPSTREAMINDIE.com
June 6, 2020
STUDIO UPDATE!!!! This has opened back in North Carolina so Bucky is back in the studio laying down guitar tracks, lining up guest players, etc. Northern Virginia, not so much, but we are getting there. This pandemic/shutdown/stay at home ordeal has at least given us some time to get some more tunes written for the album. So the process is slow going, but we're working on it.

We'd also like to give a big shout out to our friend and sit in bassist, Bobby Derosa and his wife, Katie, on the birth of their baby girl, Bella. Congratulations!!!!!
April 10, 2020
Hey everyone! We hope that everyone is staying safe, social distancing, and following the stay at home protocols for your state, we can beat COVID-19 if we all do our part.

Album update, the new album is on hold until it is safe for us to head back into the studio. All involved have family member that is immunocompromised, therefore, not only do we want to keep them safe, we want to keep everyone else and ourselves safe as well. So once we can get back into the full swing of things, we'll let you know. Thanks for the support. Stay strong, stay safe.
March 4, 2020
We are excited to announce that we will be playing the 'Acoustic on the Green' summer concert series in Leesburg, VA on August 1st this summer. Check out our 'Appearances' section for more info. It's free!! See you there.
March 2, 2020
What's up everybody!!! Studio update, we have seven songs tracked with guitars, main vocals, and we'll adding backing vocals at the end of the month and adding additional instrumentation on a few of the songs to solidify them. We're really excited about it and can't wait for everyone to hear it. So stay tuned.
January 27, 2020
